Will a Hail Claim Raise My Car Insurance Rates in Arizona?
· 5 min read

Every time hail hits the Valley, the same question comes up in our shop: "If I file this claim, will my insurance go up?" It's a fair worry. Here is how it actually works.
Hail Is a Comprehensive Claim, Not a Collision Claim
Your auto policy has two kinds of physical-damage coverage. Collision pays when you hit something. Comprehensive pays for things that happen to your car that aren't a crash: theft, vandalism, a cracked windshield, a tree branch — and hail.
Insurers price these very differently. A collision claim where you were at fault tells the insurer something about your driving. A comprehensive claim for hail tells them a storm happened. It is a no-fault event, and it is not treated as a mark against you as a driver.
What That Means for Your Premium
In most cases, a single hail claim does not raise your rate the way an at-fault accident does. Insurers generally do not apply an at-fault surcharge to comprehensive claims, and many Arizona drivers file a hail claim and see no change at renewal.
Two honest caveats. First, premiums can rise across an entire area after a major storm because the insurer's losses in that ZIP code went up — and that increase applies whether or not you filed. Second, a pattern of several comprehensive claims in a short period can affect how an insurer views the policy. One hail claim is not a pattern.
Your Deductible Is the Real Cost — and It Can Be Reduced
What you actually pay is your comprehensive deductible, commonly $250 to $1,000. If that is what's holding you back, ask us about deductible assistance. On qualifying comprehensive claims we offer up to $1,000 in deductible assistance, plus rental assistance so you're not stranded while the car is in the shop. We'll explain eligibility at your free inspection.
Why Not Filing Usually Costs More
Some drivers decide to live with the dents. That decision has a price:
- Resale value. Hail damage is the first thing a buyer or appraiser sees, and it knocks real money off the vehicle. Repairing with PDR keeps the factory paint and the value.
- Paint damage over time. Each dent stresses the paint at the impact point. Arizona sun and heat make it worse. Dents that could have been repaired cleanly can turn into chips and corrosion.
- Lease and loan obligations. If the vehicle is leased or financed, unrepaired hail damage can be charged back at turn-in or affect the payoff.
- Claim deadlines. The coverage exists for exactly this. Letting it lapse means paying out of pocket later for a repair the policy would have covered now.
